Psychological & Psycho-Social Counselling
Individual Adults
My primary focus is working with individual adults (18 years and older), providing support tailored to each client’s unique experiences and goals.
Psychological & Psycho-Social Counselling
Psychological counselling is a process "to help people improve their well-being, prevent and alleviate distress and maladjustment, resolve crises, and increase their ability to function better in their lives" (American Psychological Association).
Psycho-social counselling differs from medicine and psycho-therapy in that treatment approaches are from "the perspective of experiences of conflict and disorientation and their resolution, and not from the perspective of concepts of illness" (Swiss Association for Counseling).
Confidentiality
All information shared by a client during counselling sessions is confidential and remains confidential unless there is a legal obligation to disclose / report it to the appropriate authorities. The limits of confidentiality would include serious risk to someone’s life or safety.
Investment in Care & Appointments
Psychological & psycho-social counselling are generally not covered by basic health insurance. Some secondary insurances may reimburse psychological counselling.
My counselling services are geared toward self-pay clients, thus I am not paneled with any insurance providers.
The benefit of this is that a mental health diagnosis is not required for us to work together and your information is kept confidential.
Clients will receive an invoice by email the first week of the month for the previous month's counselling services. The invoice must be paid within 30 days.
Counselling sessions can be cancelled or rescheduled up to 48 hours in advance. For missed appointments or cancelations made after this time-frame, 50% of the session fee will be charged unless the client can provide documentation of an emergency situation, illness, or a situation outside the client's control within 7 days of the missed appointment.
Likewise, I make every reasonable effort to provide advance notice if I must cancel or reschedule an appointment.
Care Beyond This Practice
In alignment with the Swiss framework distinguishing between counselling, psychological counselling, and clinical psychotherapy, this practice does not provide services for clients presenting with clinically significant mental health disorders that require psychotherapy and/or psychiatric care, or emergency services. I do not make clinical diagnoses. If it becomes apparent that a client needs a higher level of care, the counselling agreement between myself and the client may need to end with a referral, when reasonably possible, to the appropriate mental health professional(s). Online Counselling
Based in Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland, I currently provide counselling online, offering a flexible and accessible way to connect. In-Person Counselling is planned for 2027.
The Counselling Process
The counselling process begins with a complimentary discovery call, offering an opportunity to get to know each other, discuss your situation, and answer any questions you may have.
If we determine together that there is a good fit between us, an initial counselling session is scheduled. Prior to this session, you will be asked to complete several forms electronically, including general client information, informed consent, and a questionnaire covering relevant personal history.
Following the initial session, clients can schedule sessions online. It is generally recommended to begin with one counselling session, weekly, for 6–8 weeks.
Over time, as clients make progress on their goals, we discuss together reducing the frequency of sessions (for example, moving to biweekly, monthly, as needed sessions, to ending the counselling relationship because the client's goals have been met).
A client is free to end counselling at any time, for any reason, stated or not.
Counselling Records & Data-Security
I use WriteUpp, a secure, cloud-based practice management system for client information, appointments, forms, counselling records and practice administration. WriteUpp is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified and uses encryption for data in transit and at rest, 256-bit SSL/TLS encryption, and two-factor authentication (2FA). Client data is securely hosted and geographically replicated within the European Union.
WriteUpp provides tools designed to support GDPR data-protection requirements.
Working Together
Email, text and/or a phone call are welcomed to schedule appointments, which established clients can also book online. Only scheduled counselling sessions are appropriate for process-oriented communication.
Dual-relationships are not appropriate for maintaining healthy, professional boundaries, meaning I do not have social relationships with clients beyond the counselling relationship. If, by chance, I see a client in public, I will only acknowledge the relationship if the client initiates a "hello."
I do not connect with clients via any social media platform. I will not "google" a client or do any online searches to learn information about a client. What a client chooses to share with me is the information I work with.
Likewise, I cannot be responsible for information the client chooses not to share with me that would change my perspective or recommendations regarding a situation had the information been shared.
